At Ainslie Street Dental in Cambridge, our dentists offer dental sedation options that are designed to help our patients stay comfortable during long procedures, and to calm anxious patients.
What is Dental Sedation?
Dental sedation refers to a range of techniques used to support patient comfort while undergoing dental procedures. Our dentists can help you to determine whether dental sedation is right for you.
At Ainslie Street Dental, we have a number of practices that we aim to include in our appointments in order to help our patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their dental visits.
As well as offering sedation options, we believe in working at your pace, taking breaks when you need them, and providing reassurance whenever you need it.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is inhaled through the mouth and nose. The medication can calm patients while allowing them to remain awake and able to communicate. It may also lessen anxiety, increase pain threshold, reduce gag reflex and help to make time feel as if it is passing more quickly.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedatives are pills or liquids prescribed for you by your dentist. The medication is taken orally in advance of a dental appointment so that you arrive feeling calm. These medications leave you awake for the procedure but generally produce a calming effect to significantly relax you.
IV Sedation
IV sedatives produce the deepest level of sedation without general anesthesia and are administered directly into the blood-stream through the vein. You will be attached to a monitor so that your dentist can keep track of vital signs throughout the procedure.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia is a controlled state of unconsciousness that eliminates awareness, movement and discomfort during dental procedure. Complex treatments can be completed in one appointment while you are asleep.
